What designers actually want from a site visit

A designer's first site visit produces a sketch, forty photos, and a set of dimensions that will be questioned at least twice during the project. The handoff from "I was in the room" to "I am designing the room at my desk" loses a lot.

Space planning needs the plan to be right

Furniture layout is a fit problem. Whether a sectional works, whether a dining table leaves clearance, whether a bed can go on the wall with the window — these are inches. A measured floor plan with real wall lengths and opening positions is the difference between a layout that works and a revision after delivery.

  • Wall lengths for the furniture runs
  • Opening positions, so you know what the window interrupts
  • Ceiling heights, which decide drapery, fixtures, and whether tall pieces work
  • Swing directions and traffic paths, visible in the model

The model carries the things a sketch cannot

Spinning a 3D model at your desk restores the spatial sense you had standing in the room — how two spaces connect, what you see from the doorway, where the sightlines go. That is the part photos never quite preserve.

Light, orientation, and material

Pin the things a geometry capture does not know. Which direction the windows face. What the existing flooring is. The paint color the client wants to keep. The ceiling fan that is not negotiable. Voice notes attached to the spot are faster than typing and far more likely to actually get recorded.

Hand it to the tools you use

Every scan exports as USDZ, which opens in SketchUp, Blender, and AR viewers. Starting a model from measured as-built geometry rather than rebuilding it from a sketch removes the step where the drawing stops matching the house.

Present it back

The same model that helps you design sells the design. A client who can see their own room is a client who approves faster.

A sketch is a memory of a room. A scan is the room.
